Still Feeling Off But Got Bench Press And A WOD In

I woke up this morning feeling a lot better in the head at least. My eyes were still pretty irritated, but it was manageable. Just a lot of very watery tears.

I drank and enjoyed my coffee, but while I was doing that, I was thinking about getting out into the garage to do my bench press very early. As early as was reasonable to not be a dick to the neighbors was what I was thinking. Also, it needed to be light out.

Shortly after sunrise I decided to get changed and slowly work on the bench press and see if it went okay. Lying on my back seems to be when my eyes are most irritated.

I wanted to get to the bench press before the sun really got bright, as the photophobia isn’t too pleasant. I love the big window in our home gym except when the sun coming in is inconvenient. Today would have been inconvenient.

Once I got started on the lighter sets, I knew I would be fine. The eye thing was just a small annoyance. The weight was moving fairly well today as it has been while benching, so it wasn’t a big surprise. The heavier sets felt pretty easy. I got a fairly easy feeling 6 reps in at the 155-pound AMRAP. The weight wasn’t that heavy at all. I left some in the tank today with the other stuff going on, but it felt great to get under the bar.

Music for the bench press was Alice In Chains.

I grabbed something to eat after I was done benching. After eating, I spent a lot of time lying around not doing much more than doom scrolling on my tablet or other time-killers, but I did have in mind that I wanted to get a WOD in.

Today I wasn’t set on doing something unweighted as my head was feeling better, but I still wanted something fairly simple that wouldn’t require me trying to look at too much. I settled on an older on-ramp, one that I do often. It’s just dumb hop-overs and hang power snatches with the dumbbell.

It is simple but effective. This morning I went rather light with the weight. Used the 25# dumbbell. I also felt like I went with a bit less intense of a pace with the snatches early on, but I did pick it up later in the workout. It was more about feeling things out.

Hopefully by tomorrow and if not, then by Friday I will be back to normal. I am pretty sure it’s just the pollen. I only get this way in the fall, really, but this year it’s worse than normal.

It felt good to get a workout in. Moving calms my overly busy mind, and though my brain has been a little quieter these past few weeks. Each day I wake up looking forward to a WOD. I can never stop being grateful I started with bootcamp all those years ago, not too long after I got my thyroid cancer ripped out. I know that it was not actually ripped out, or at least I hope it wasn’t, but I like to think of it that way.

Trying to do better at taking care of my body was the best decision ever. You only get one of them. Sci-fi isn’t here yet. Believe me. Every so often I wish it were there. There are times when I’d like a do-over with my body. But at the end of the day I am fortunate, and the problems with it are all part of my story and what made me who I am today. The best side effect of that is it takes care of my mind!

It is all about doing something. That something should be the best something I can muster up on that day. When I was sick with COVID-19 several years ago, I hopped on the rower a bit when I was feeling up to it.

Music for the WOD was Beastie Boys.
