Finally Got On Top Of Martic Forge Trestle

My girlfriend has vacation this week. We knew we wanted to get out geocaching. It has been a long time since we have gotten out. Her work schedule hasn’t been ideal for that and when she had off we were normally doing something else.

Looking at the weather last week we knew we had to get out. We were thinking for a hike but then I remembered the Enola Low Grade trail and thought it might be nice to get down there again. The leaves are past peak now but thought it might be the perfect time to get up on the Martic Forge Trestle since it is reopened now.

We originally planned on getting down there after we voted on Tuesday. We saw the weather looked a little warmer for yesterday so we changed our mind and did some running around before we voted on Tuesday and got out for a walk in town to grab a few caches instead.

We got up and drank our coffee while Molly waited for it to warm up. Around mid morning we got ready and hit the road. We made no wrong turns getting there. That’s a first. We searched bit with no luck for a cache at the parking lot but had no luck. So that was the kind of day this will be we thought.

We headed to the trail and went to the bridge first. I thought there were more geocaches that direction but there were not.. At least not until the two got published while we were a mile the other direction on the trail. This trail is wider and I think the people on bikes re much more respectful towards walkers like us than some of the others. More often than not they blow past you side by side on the Northwest River trail basically forcing you off the side.

Looking West On The Trail

This is a photo looking west on a rail trail with some sun coming through the trees into the cutout.

We got to the main reason for coming here first and took the short walk out to the bridge to take in the view from high above the Pequea. Ever since we found the geocache below I have always wanted to see what it looks like from up top. We have been wanting to get here but timing never worked then there was also the fire so it was out of commission for a few years.

The view did not disappoint. It was absolutely worth it to make this short trip. It is such a shame someone burnt the wooden version of the deck down because that would have been neat to experience. The tree leaves are past their peak color now but it was still an awesome view to take in.

We headed west on the trail after that with a mixed back of luck on he geocaching. I thought they would be the ones we normally found along here but a lot of them were up the bank. I wore the worst possible shoes for that because I need to buy new hiking shoes. We passed some of them by for this trip.

This time of the year is without a doubt the worst for me visually when we are out geocaching. There are enough leaves to make weird very dark shadows and blinding light. The lower twigs tend to have few if any leaves so I am always afraid I will poke my eye. Leaves help me see them because they are bright and large. The sticks are small and blend in with the background so much. I manage but it is just harder.

I really like this trail. It is a lot quieter than other ones since it is more out of the way. It has the mountains feel too. I like how there are sections of it that are blasted out of the rocks. Those gorge areas are so quiet if there isn’t anyone nearby.

The weather today was absolutely perfect. It got into the middle 70s so it was shorts weather with mostly sunny skies a not too humid. There were a few thin clouds just to give the sky a little contrast.

I have said it before but we are very fortunate to have so many great trails and parks or places to hike around here. We are a short drive from even the Appalachian Trail if we were still able to hike like we used to.

Not only are we close to places to hike but there is a so much rich history around here. We are in one of the oldest states in the United States so a lot of the events in early US history directly effected the early settlers here happened here. There are tons of very old graveyards to explore.

The neatest thing that happened while we were here is I got a notification about two new caches that were published. I happened to have me phone in my hand to zoom in with the camera otherwise I likely wouldn’t have even looked. The caches were here in this very trail about a mile from us. We stopped searched for the cache we were searching for and headed off to try for the FTF.

The fresh air was felt great! I guess you could say it was just what the doctor ordered. It so good for the body, mind and soul to get out in nature! WE have done more city stuff recently than nature stuff. I like that too though.
