Deadlifts This Morning Then A WOD with Weighted Squats

Last night I fell asleep quickly, then something woke me up. I was just there in bed wide awake for a little, and then I remembered the Phillies game was on. So I figured if I am awake, why not just get up and watch it? The game was disappointing, but it occupied my noisy mind. It seems the Phillies forgot how to hit again. They always do terrible in Seattle for some reason, though.

I slept in until 5 today after being up until after midnight, so needless to say, I was feeling tired. It was nice and cool in the house, though, with it finally getting cooler at night. That made my coffee taste even better. I got through the coffee fast today!

Around 8:00 AM I decided I wanted to get out into the garage and get this week’s deadlifts done. The lighter warmup sets felt good but heavier than they should have. Did feel like I was moving well.

The set of three at 245 pounds and five at 215 pounds actually felt easy and light. Not bad at all. When I got. Now that I am typing this, I realize I completely messed up the counts for the sets. We’ll blame that on being tired.

I was supposed to do three plus at 270 pounds for the final set. I only got one, and then I felt like I couldn’t set my back quite right, so I walked away. Given the past few weeks, I was happy with that, though.

I relaxed for a bit, but I was thinking about wanting to get a WOD in too this morning. It was reasonably cool in the garage, and the fan felt great with this drier air than we had been having when I did my deadlifts earlier in the morning.

I wanted a WOD with a little more intensity than I have been doing, as my hip is feeling fine now. Another thing is I wanted to reintroduce light but weighted squats in it for time.

I settled on one that was just dumb filler hopovers but sets of 20 back squats with my 50-pound sandbag. My goal was to do those in as big a set as I could without going to failure. Under normal circumstances, I’d do them all unbroken, but with the hip, I backed off a little.

The squats felt great. The first round I did all 20 unbroken, then I broke them into two or three sets in the rounds after. Until the final round. For the last set I went all out just taking a quick breath and a second after the twelvth rep. I did not put the bag down during any of the sets. I just sort of walked for a few seconds.

This workout felt great and got my heart rate up a little more than I have been recently. The squats felt excellent, and I felt as if I were moving well with them. Several hours later I am typing this and am feeling no tightness in my leg or hip, so that’s a good thing.
