Nice To Get Squats In Again
A little over a week ago, I stepped in a hole next to the curb getting out of the car and jammed my hip good. It got angry as that day went on. I can’t tell you how annoying it is that they half-ass everything around here to save a dollar.
As last week went on, it was feeling better, and my hamstring that had gotten very tight was twitching and releasing. Yesterday I debated about getting my squats in, but it was hot and humid by the time I was ready to head out and do it.
Instead of the squats, I settled on a quick WOD that would be manageable with the heat and the extremely sweaty hands. The WOD felt good.
This morning I woke up, and for the first time I didn’t feel any anger in my hip or hamstring when I got up. It was also cooler and less humid, so I decided I would get those back squats in bright and early and see how they felt.
I drank my coffee and got ready to take the long walk out to the garage and see how they felt. It was super early, so I did not play any music, but that’s okay. I really wanted to focus on how they felt. Not only that, but I have said before I like to lift without music occasionally. Squats are like therapy for my mind, and yesterday was a particularly tough day. Stuff had been building in my head for a while. Today was much, much better, but it was nice to focus on the good. Actually had a quick little but very helpful cry.
I took my time working up through the progressively heavier sets, and for the most part, they felt great.
The final set called for the 3+ rep AMRAP but I had already done it for this day, and this week I was going to most likely settle for a single just to get under the weight. The 250 pounds was a moderate weight, but I noticed during the earlier sets I was favoring the opposite leg just a little.
I settled for that one rep at 250 pounds, and it felt pretty good and pretty easy. I wanted to go for me, but I forced myself to stick with the game plan. Could I have done more? Absolutely, but that doesn’t mean it would have been wise.
I guess I will have to work around this sort of thing more and more as I get older. I am grateful that I could get my ass moving years ago after my cancer diagnosis because it would have been so much more difficult to start later.
I am grateful that we have a well equipped home gym so I can do things on my terms when it works for me and not based on someone else’s schedule. It is especially helpful when you consider that I don’t drive, so I can’t as easily just go when it is convenient. With the garage gym, I can.
I don’t have to be concerned about working around other people. People tend to be very oblivious to what’s going on around them. I remember at the old Crossfit gym they had the “new you” thing going on, and I suddenly became aware of a screaming baby right next to me in a stroller as I was quickly cycling jerks. The last thing I want to do is harm an innocent baby, so that ruined the WOD for me since I slowed down immensely to be careful and not drop from overhead to avoid weird bounces. The coaches should have said something to them. There was also the member that brought their kids in that kept running back and forth doring WODS..
