Got Self Hosted LanguageTool Up And Running Now

LanguageTool, at least the paid version has been good to me like I stated yesterday. Harper seems great too but there are little things about it that it was missing.

I proofread my stuff and all. I have a habit of mistyping to as too and vice versa. Likely my vision is a huge factor in it but when I am proofreading I tend to miss that. It has always been a struggle for me to see my own errors unless I am looking years later when it’s now hanging fresh in my mind. There are a few things like that the Harper misses.

Looking at their GitHub that is a goal to get some of those things worked out better.

Harper has come a long way since I first looked at it maybe a year or so ago when I saw it mentioned on hacker news.

This morning I got to thinking that I should look into self-hosting LanguageTool. I tried long ago but gave up for one reason or another. I think it was either that Java stuff was flaky on FreeBSD at the time or maybe it was me being in my head about the DNA stuff.

This morning I started working on getting it set up.

There doesn’t seem to be a way to use the web UI that way at least not through the official package. I have not looked deeply into that.

They do have a GUI program. It’s just the most basic text editor that shows your errors and stuff. It’s the ugly Java program but it does seem to work okay.

I will say that this free version in my use case works just as well as the paid one. I know it doesn’t have all the rules. It also doesn’t have the AI stuff but I don’t use that anyway. I tinkered with it a bit in the beginning but I am not really crazy about AI changing my own words.

These past few weeks I have been having a lot of fun on my computer doing this stuff. I started with the templates for this website then I wrote that simple script.

Now I am playing with programs I haven’t used before. I get great joy out of this kind of stuff. Over the past couple of eras I have kind of gotten away from that. I spent a lot of time deep in my head and couldn’t focus.

Like a switch it’s clear now and I am back to having my focus.

The hosting this on my computer seems to be so much faster. Maybe not as fast as Harper but it does so much more than Harper at this point. It does have like a 10-year head start though. I guess not having to send everything over the internet certainly helps with the latency.

This sort of things just feeds my curious mind. That mind is never quiet and is never not wondering how to approach things differently.

We shall see where I go with this but for now I think I may just use them both. It won’t take long and will be a great way to see if I grow to prefer one over the other as time goes on.
