Apps That Do Not Work With Accessibility Settings
The other day I had to order my thyroid pills go get delivered. Sure I could have stopped by and picked them up when we were driving past but I have gotten so used to not doing that I get them mailed. I do not drive being visually impaired so I just don’t like to ask anyone for anything unless I need it.
I have not checked the website on the computer recently but several years ago they made that so incredibly broken and at one point i think they even forced one to use the app for orders.
The app is garbage. It is bloated. It does not have a dark mode at least that I am aware of so I am forced to use the awful default. That has always been the case.
When I was going to submit my order I spent much longer than I should have hunting around the screen for a button to check out but there was nothing to be seen. The light bulb in my brain lit up so I went into android settings and set the font to a much smaller one.
With the smaller font that button was visible. The text was nearly impossible to read even with my magnifier. That is the way things are these days. The tools are there to make things more accessible but the sense is not.
This could be done just fine using the website which the app is nothing more than a front for. It is just text. Not even an image. It doesn’t need to be aligned exactly by pixel to look exactly like the designer envisioned. Devices can scroll now. Why not use that if it doesn’t fit on the screen. I feel like that would be better than it not showing at all. If one is unable to checkout that is lost revenue right?
These usability bugs are always in apps. You can bet your ass that the trackers never get broken though!
I have said it before. Maybe not on here but I have said it int person I know but apps should have to disclose exactly what and when they are tracking. Websites should too for that matter. They should have to disclose who they share with and what they share. Lets get rid of these terms of service agreements that basically say they can do whatever they want when ever they want and you automatically agree. Got sidetracked. That’s a rant for another day.
Instead of just copying poor accessibility choices with apps lets get to a place where they are accessible for all. There has been no problem making them so dumbed down that them down so much that more than two sentences or choices on a screen is too much. I only ask that these companies hire developers that will put a reasonable effort into making things work with my settings that Android itself provides.
I do not expect them to fully cater to my needs. That is unrealistic. But it would be nice if they would create things in a way that respect and follow the operating system and work with my settings.
