Actually Put Effort Into My Squats

Last week, most, if not all, of the week I had some sort of a bug in me. At first I thought it was pollen, but I just felt off in general. Really stuffy head and weak with low energy. For my lifts, I did them, but I did the bare minimum effort, and actually squats felt the worst.

Finally I am feeling better, starting over the weekend. Go figure; I feel better when Molly’s vacation is over. We weren’t able to do anything anyway for ourselves, so I guess it didn’t really matter.

This morning I woke up feeling pretty decent too. Not nearly as rundown as I had been feeling, so I was anxious to get out in the garage and get under the bar. I wasn’t going to be overly aggressive, but I was going to put in a little more effort into the lifts than last week.

The warm-up sets felt pretty good, actually. Last week even those felt pretty rough. I felt like I was moving really well too.

The final working sets felt surprisingly good compared to the most recent time. Don’t get me wrong; the bar felt much heavier than it should have, and I am still feeling relatively weak, but at least it felt doable.

The final AMRAP at 1+ reps called for 255 pounds. That felt a lot more grindy than it should have, but I got it done. Never once during that lift did I feel like I was going to fall. It is a light weight that should have felt much lighter. Normally I should be able to knock out a good 5 or 6 reps, but today really wasn’t the day to push that. It was more about just getting under that bar. Before I even started, I knew I was going to stop at just one.

Success is about working around the curveballs life tosses at you, and there can be many of them. It is about doing the best you can do on that particular day.

It’s not really measured by some number on a board. Unless you are actually competing, which I am not, it is all about being the best version of yourself.

I am forever grateful for learning to get out there and move and exercise for myself. I’d urge everyone to get out there and find what works for them. Just do something. I could be running, biking, hiking lifting, doing calisthenics, yoga, or anything else. It’s good for the body and even better for the cluttered mind.
