Went With The 97 Pound kettlebell But A Bit Slower

Last night I slept okay. Certainly not long enough, but that is pretty normal. I woke up and started drinking my coffee, and at one point while I was sitting downstairs talking to Molly, the Phillies home opener came up. We had written that off due to pricing and weather. I came upstairs and glanced at SeatGeek and saw tickets for cheaper than last year, so I jumped on them. I guess that means we are going.

It has been a while. I wanted to get my hair cut, and we had to run to the grocery store. There was also some other running around we had to do. Early this afternoon I finally had the time and decided to get out into the garage and do a WOD. I doubt I will do one on Thursday, so I didn’t want to miss two days this week.

I wanted something short and sweet but wanted to use the heavy kettlebell. It has been a few weeks. I have been hitting WOD hard, though, so I wanted something with a bit of a slower pace. The swings felt great, but I broke them sooner than I did the last few times I did this workout.

The floor at spots felt a bit slippery, so that was another reason to tone it back a little. I certainly got a great workout out of his WOD. It got my heart rate up, but not as high as it could have. I wanted moderation on this day.

I wound up finishing the round of 14 swings in the ascending ladder that went up by two. Of course the hop-overs were a waste of time, but it was good in today’s plan. The last couple of times, I completed the round of 16. Today I just found myself taking more breaks.

These workouts are about making yourself a better and healthier version of yourself than you were yesterday. Not some score on the board. Especially not some arbitrary score that someone comes up with that has never seen you move in person. That would be my one criticism of CrossFit-style workouts. The owner of our gym was on board with me not caring about scores plenty of times. I spent the first year or so working on form and cycling and all that sort of stuff. It was about moving well, not fast. To a point that is still on my mind, particularly when there is a movement that is a known problem area for me.

Street parking should emphasize moving well over scores, but they normally don’t. They actually push goals more than I would like. Goals are good but should not be the only factor. We all have different abilities and different struggles. Personally, I will never be fast at hop-overs. I find the idea of not twisting my ankle or hurting myself because I can’t really see what I am hopping over preferable. The same with box jumps, and that’s why I see no need to do nearly 100 of them a week. That seems to be what they aim for.fs
