Some Of Our Petunias Are Still Growing And Blooming
This morning when I was in the garage working out green caught my eye out in the backyard. There really isn’t much green during this time of the year here in Lancaster County. Between the reduced daylight and colder weather, things are pretty much done growing for the year now.
We have had cold nights whee it dropped well below freezing, so that finalized most plants. Seeing the green made me go outside to check it out. It turns out that the petunias we had planted in the Mr. Stacky are all dead now but the bottom row of planters. The ones on the southern side of the tower seem to be thriving still. That group has plenty of flowers and growth. Sure, there is reduced blooming on the northward-facing side, but there are still some flowers and buds. The leaves are still fairly deep green.
The bottom section of the planter is fairly well protected from the weather, and the ground itself is probably still relatively warm. There are a lot of tree roots rotting from our old tree. I wonder if that decay generates some heat too? It was a pleasant surprise to spot these late flowers.
November petunias
Nature offers us so many great surprises, and I learned long ago to take them all in and enjoy them. We don’t know how many days we have left to live. I wasted years in depression and not really allowing myself to enjoy even the simplest things. Not anymore. If I see flowers, I stop and smell them.
