Snow Silence

This morning it started snowing around dawn or maybe a little before. By midmorning the snow was piling up, and it was snowing pretty heavily. I didn’t expect it to be coming down that hard, so it was a nice surprise.

It wasn’t much below freezing, but it was cold enough for the snow to fall and stick. I think we wound up with close to three inches on the ground. It was still coming down moderately but about to end according to radar when I went out to shovel off the sidewalk. I like to try to get to that before the mailman comes through. I didn’t get out there early enough today.

It was a wet snow, so it was sticking to the trees and everything. That is to me always the prettiest type of snow. I love to see it in the woods.

The most enjoyable part to me when I was doing the snow was the calm quiet of the winter day. There wasn’t anyone out yet, so that helped, and also no cars passed by while I was out there. With the basically calm winds, it just had that quiet stillness of freshly fallen snow. I miss that when I was at the mountains. I was only there a few times when it had snowed, but that just did something special for me.

We would also go out hiking at the state park often growing up, especially when there was fresh snow. When we were quiet, it was nice to hear the silence there. I can still hear in my head the quiet sounds of the Delaware River when we were at Neshaminy State Park.

Thanks Mother Nature for the fond memories.
