One Of The More Unique Storms
The storm that we had yesterday was one of the more unique storms that I can remember. It was a very cold storm that began with heavy snow. The snow was very dry but also dense. During the snow, for the most part, the temperature remained in the single digits here. That is not something that occurs too often.
By late morning the snow mixed with and quickly changed to mostly sleet. That happened with the temperature still in the single digits. It only barely budged into the lower teens for hours while sleet fell at varying rates all afternoon. Even late this afternoon we were only in the middle teens with heavy sleet falling. When I was clearing the snow and ice, I was getting pounded by sleet.
It was a unique storm with plenty of cold and certainly caused problems on the road, but it doesn’t support the end-of-the-world hype the media was giving it around here. Sure, in other areas they had the freezing rain, but not here.
That was some strong cold air damming. The temperature above the surface was above freezing enough for the precipitation to form as rain, but the cold later was thick enough for it to freeze into nice ice pellets.
It has to have been a decade since we have had a storm that was this cold. We had heavy sleet not too long ago, but the cold moved in after the storm. With the deep freeze incoming for the next week, plus this snow and sleet, will become like a glacier. It will be around for a while, I am sure. The fact that we shouldn’t get above freezing for over a week will help keep it around too.
