Itching To Go Back To A VPS
These past few days I have really been having the itch to move this site back to a VPS. I have been hosting it on shared hosting for a while not but there is something fun and rewarding about the VPS. When I break something, I have to fix it. Nothing on here matters enough that a bit of downtime if it is my fault is a big deal.
Sure, using shared hosting is convenient and certainly cheaper. I chose to switch back to it when my head was full of clutter from the DNA stuff. I didn’t have the focus to maintain the operating system and stuff like that. That doesn’t take me all that much time, but I just didn’t have the focus or really care to bother with it. Now my mind is all but settled, and I am ready to do that again, I think.
I don’t know what I will switch to if I do, but I am thinking a smaller provider and maybe something from a newer company. I have been looking at some, and some have caught my attention. I may have done it before, but I am going to try to hold out on it until after my upcoming trip.
My only real requirement is that I have to have a way to install FreeBSD on the machine. I know FreeBSD and like using it. It just makes more sense to me than Linux does, and the license is more inline with my beliefs. Linux is good. Obviously, it’s good because it is used all over the place.
I guess I just miss tinkering around with changing things at the server level and stuff. Doing things is how I learn, and I always like to learn new things.
Dedicated servers are fun to and I would love to go that route, but it just seems so wasteful. I don’t need that kind of resource. I host only static files.
I am looking for something cheap but reliable. Support is nice, but it’s not something that I really need much of. I just need them to pay their bills and keep the host running. I am really trying not to do the typical Carl thing and just jump right in and choose the first provider I see.
