Heard And Saw A Woodpecker
Growing up, a memory that stands out to me a lot is hearing the various animals up the mountains that weren’t really around down in the Philly suburbs. One that sticks in my mind is hearing woodpeckers in the woods behind Pop’s trailer. I don’t think I ever saw one back then, but you would hear them.
They are so high in the trees and usually move around a lot. I used binoculars a lot to try to see stuff, but they only show a small part of what is there. Woodpeckers move around a lot, so I just never happened to be able to look at the right spot at the right time.
Yesterday, while sitting at the train station, we heard one pecking. It sounded very close. By pure luck I managed to point my phone at the right place at the right time to capture a poor picture of it. Using my phone to see things that I normally would never have been able to see is such a wonderful tool.
I have always loved nature, and I just always missed so much of it because of my poor vision. I really like how the phone camera can zoom in so much and retain the clarity and contrast so much better than physical magnification could.
