Continuing With Heavier Dumbells

I did not sleep well at all last night. I woke up, and it was too hot in the bedroom. We didn’t have the window open because of the rain, but when I woke up, it was opened up. There wasn’t much of a breeze at that time, and it was still humid and in the lower 60s, so it didn’t really cool it off much. I found myself lying in bed for hours trying to sleep. I finally fell asleep.

Surprisingly, when I woke up, I felt okay with the lack of sleep. When I got up, it was raining, and the temperature was crashing as the cold front had finally passed. I found myself thinking about wanting to get a WOD in earlier while I was still feeling somewhat energetic. I wanted to do something a little heavier again. Basically, I just don’t want to mess with the nonsense they have been programming.

The one I settled on was one with just hopovers, which are nothing more than filler for me but fit with my goal of wanting to use the 40-pound dumbbells. The hang power cleans were sets of 18, 15, and 12 with a rest after that, then go back up the ladder. All of my sets through the whole first half were unbroken. That set of 15 didn’t feel great at all. The set of 12 was pretty challenging too, as I was pretty into the WOD by then. The rest was nice. Jumping back into it, I went through the set of 12 unbroken again.

I broke up the sets of 15 and 18. That had been my plan from the start with this workout. I wanted to be aggressive early on and back off a bit as I got tired. The WOD was pretty successful. The heaviest I have done this particular WOD in the past was with 35 pounds, so that was a rewarding feeling.

Yesterday I did a workout with the 40-pounders too. That one was just rowing and push presses. That felt great also! The sets then were unbroken until they got into the 20 and 25 rep range. I had not done that one with that heavy of a weight in the past either.

As of late I have been going heavier pretty often, and it has really been feeling relatively easy. In the past when I would grab the heavier dumbbells, it would feel like more of a grind, but that just hasn’t been the case.

For me, I have different phases when I am working out. Every so often I go lighter and faster. Other times it’s about just moving, which has been the case the past few months. Other times it’s about going heavier, which is what I have been into lately. When I am doing more than just the bare minimum, I like to keep it in my head that it has to be.

Admittedly, I have spent too much time in that just move phase. That was just the mental rut that I had been in. I feel like that has greatly improved now.
